The indigenous forest at Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is most noteworthy and the largest remaining example in the Langeberg.

A large variety of animals may be seen.

The area is particularly rich in birdlife and birdhides do exist for viewing.

The source of the Duivenhoks river is in the Langeberg mountains close to Heidelberg. The river then flows past Heidelberg and Vermaaklikheid to the sea at Puntjie.

The mountains are full of some of the most pristine fynbos you can find in the Western Cape.

The Breede river mouth is at Witsand only about 35km from Heidelberg. Witsand offers excellent fishing and beautiful beaches. This is the whale nursery of Southern Africa and offers some of the best whale watching in the country.

A unique wilderness area exists in the Langeberg mountains close to Heidelberg. The Boosmansbos Wilderness Area is 14200 ha. There are 64km of paths, and hikers may choose their own routes.
